Which options to sell on marketplaces are there in Spain? (1)

12/02/2018
  • Are you thinking about selling on marketplaces in Spain? These are the options you have if you choose this channel.

  • You can see it in your competitors, your partners... even in your customers: the fever of the marketplaces, this digital version of the malls where we all can have our own corner. Now the trend of the marketplaces has arrived and seems to stay, but... do you know which options you have if you want to sell on marketplaces in Spain? If you don't have it very clear, we explain it today.
  • Selling on markeplaces in Spain: generalist

  • In this category we find those macro-eCommerce that handle huge catalogues and, which usually, complement its range of products with digital services too. You know who we mean:
  • #1 – Amazon

  • The giant that needs no introduction. It has been the marketplace of reference in Spain for years and in other countries where its tentacles reach to.

If you decide to sell at Amazon, they will put many facilities to do so both at domestic and international levels. Even you can choose to use its own logistics platform, so that if necessary they would manage from the stock to shipments.

Of course: Amazon is not for everyone. It requires that you have decent margins and a practically exclusive product (and better if you are a manufacturer)
  • #2 – AliExpress

  • It is said that it is the Chinese Amazon, but with the figures in hand we could rather say that Amazon is the American AliExpress.

The main handicap that it always had is being based in China, which makes difficult for other countries at many levels, such as shipments and complicated procedures

AliExpress Plaza, which operates directly from Spain is available since a while. So, everything becomes much simpler for customers and merchants

Currently only sell through this service some of their best merchants of fashion and electronics, but it is just a matter of time they begin to open to locals and other categories.
  • Selling on markeplaces in Spain: vertical

  • When you are considering jump to sale through this type of eCommerce, you always have this the same doubt : should I go to a general model that brings me a greater amount of potential traffic? Or should I prefer a vertical marketplace more specialized and aligned with my niche market

The answer cannot be more simple: try and stay with what works best. And if what works best is more than one, open your strategy and add them all.

By sectors maybe fashion is the one that gives you more opportunities to sell at marketplaces from Spain. You have more or less specialized options:
  • #1 – Zalando

  • One of the world leaders in footwear sale, which has been diversifying its offerings to other products in fashion and accessories for long. It offers a partner program whose proposal is near that of a marketplace

Since the end of 2016, already allows national brands to sell through its platform. In fact, long ago they want to capture this type of affiliates, but of course, as in all these cases, you have to adapt to their rules respecting free delivery and 100 days return commitment.
  • #2 – Etsy

  • Etsy is especially focused on craft and DIY. Stores that do not respect all this premise have being added, but it is still a good place to start a business based on manual labor. Fashion, jewelry, accessories, decoration, toys... everything handmade.

Fees and rates charged are quite acceptable, and this test ground can be very useful to test the capacity of your business or try with specific products.
  • As an alternative, we could recommend you Zibbet. Check it out because it is very good, and it is even more profitable than Etsy and allows you to export your listings directly from Etsy. In return, it does not have as much introduction in Spain.
  • #3 – Privalia

  • Continuing with fashion topic, Privalia is another marketplace that has historically worked very well at domestic level.

Keep in mind that they require you a minimum discount to sell with them because, at the end, and after all, that is its distinguishing advantage. This means that you have to do the numbers very well before opting for this marketplace to avoid getting yourself boxed in.
  • #4 – Carrefour

  • Yes, you read it correctly. Carrefour is working hard to adapt its business model to digital

With Amazon landing on the fresh products segment, the rest of players have to react. Carrefour Marketplace has an added value that can be very interesting and is the multi-channel. If you finally choose it, as a merchant you can sell also in retail taking advantage of its infrastructure.

These are some of the most important marketplaces. Missing many others, such as eBay to generalist level, Fnac leisure and electronics, or even Wallapop, but we will leave them for next day.
  • The most important is to know your options if you want to sell on marketplaces in Spain, because they are, and more and more. With marketplaces you can widen the posibilities of your online store.
