What is phygital?

18/03/2021
  • Do you know what the term "phygital" means? It is a concept linked to the idea of omnichannel that you should know about.

  • Our eCommerce dictionary is increasingly filled with terms related to omnichannel. It is obvious if we take into account that this is one of the trends that is increasing year after year.
  • What is phygital?

  • This term comes from the combination of two English words: physical and digital.

As you can imagine, it refers to eCommerce and retail actions and strategies that are designed to work together, enhancing each other, increasing the effectiveness of both channels. In this it differs, for example, from showrooming because we are not competing: we are collaborating.

We can define this strategy as especially based on the customer experience, extending the interaction via web or app to the physical store and vice versa.
  • Examples of Phygital

  • A new concept is always better understood with some examples of actions that can be carried out:

    • Use pop up stores: if you do not want to invest too much or make a long-term commitment to a lease, you can open an ephemeral store that only works during specific seasonal periods. Add retail to your strategy and add the physical part to your channel mix.
    • Augmented reality: many people have problems when trying on clothes and what it means for retailers to permanently sanitize garments, virtual changing rooms are really useful (at least in this context).
    • No stock stores: along the lines of what Nordstrom did a couple of years ago. These are stores exclusively designed for customers to pick up their online purchases, although there is also the option of allowing online shopping from the store itself with the advice of a professional.

There are many options and, in this world where the boundaries between digital and physical are becoming increasingly blurred, it is a great choice
