Sustainable eCommerce niches: ideas to undertake in 2020 (2)

13/02/2020
  • We have more sustainable niches and ideas to undertake in 2020 based on the respect for the environment. Pay attention to the examples we gather this time.

  • We already said, by closing the previous post on ecological market niches ,that we were leaving a lot of alternatives unsaid. As we do not want that happens, we will complete that article with a few more ideas.

Until now, we had focused on issues related to food and especially household items, such as aluminum bottles, reusable coffee thermos and bamboo cutlery.

As we do not want to give the impression that all sustainability oriented eCommerce niches are found in that segment, we will explore different ones. Because any industry is likely to become greener and any product has room for responsibility.
  • #1 – Sustainable fashion

  • The first example of sustainable products that are not eaten or used for eating is the organic or sustainable fashion.

When does a garment receive this label ? When in its elaboration natural materials have been used and the processes to produce it consume only the essential energy and resources. Reducing the carbon footprint is absolutely a priority and one of the aspects that make a difference with respect to conventional clothing.

These niches work especially well when the ethical part of the business is enhanced. Linking to concepts such as fair trade helps us position as a brand.
  • EXAMPLE: The truth is that there is more and more to choose from, but we are going to keep
Tiralahilacha. In addition to having clothes with a very cool design and made of 100% organic cotton, they wanted to position themselves against the so-called fast fashion with a quality fashion proposal in which transparency prevails (we know who, how and when we our garment was made)
  • #2 – Vegan shoes

  • In the same way that there is sustainable fashion, we can find footwear that meets these parameters

Sometimes there is some confusion with the term vegan. It should not be associated exclusively with diet, we are really talking about a lifestyle in which animal suffering is removed by a matter of conscience. In addition to suffering when processed as food, animals suffer in other industries such as textiles and cosmetics

Shoes can be perfectly considered vegan from the moment that no raw material from animals has been used, and instead synthetic or organic materials but of vegetable origin are used.
  • EXAMPLE: Mireia Playà has been selling her vegan shoes for years for years. They are 100% cruelty free (respectful of animals), to the point of having achieved PETA Vegan Approved certification. lleva años comercializando sus zapatos veganos para mujer.
  • #3 – Ecological cosmetics

  • Sustainable niches related to cosmetics are some of those that are growing more in recent years. In fact, in this same blog we have previously commented on cases such as solid shampoo, also cruelty free makeup, soaps, deodorants and other zero waste hygiene products.

It is logical that the informed and aware consumer seeks natural and chemical-free alternatives of products that are regularly applied to the body. If we add to that an aspect that has to do directly with packaging and the amount of plastics that are used to make them, we find a field that offers a lot of potential growth.
  • EXAMPLE: The Italian brand 100% Pure is one of the most “radical” in its activism. They claim to have a cosmetic line with more than 500 references that use organic, toxic-free (perfumes included) and vegan products in which no animal tests are performed.
  • #4 – Fair cell phones

  • One moment, you may not have seen this coming, so I insist on it: there are sustainable cell phones. Not only do we say that technology can be ecological, it must be so because the electronics industry is really one of those that generate a greater carbon footprint, waste and spills

The key to this niche lies in finding a supplier that guarantees that the materials they produce their cell phones with, and the processes to create them are sustainable. It is also important to know the level of respect that these companies have towards their workers.
  • EXAMPLE: We can highlight Fairphone phones. One of the brand's priorities is to get terminals with a longer lifespan. For them, it does not make sense the rhythm at which perfectly usable mobiles are discarded and, of course, they are terrified of the programmed obsolescence (not for nothing  they are 100% repairable with a 10/10 according to iFixit).

They have a very interesting recycling program, and they even encourage it by making a discount on the purchase of a new Fairphone.
  • Were you aware up to the point that there are sustainable niches you can exploit as an entrepreneur? Go for it!
