New social networks: Polyvore, Snapchat, Depop

09/06/2015
  • It is no secret that social networks have been a real revolution since Facebook travelled around the world in 2007. Since then, companies have learned to keep a more personal and direct relationship with their clients, and corporate communication has been deeply transformed. But, sometimes it seems that the world of social networks ends at Pinterest and Instagram, and it is not true: little by little, new social networks are building as powerful alternatives to the social media ever, and it is interesting that you know them.Today, we will talk to you about Polyvore, Snapchat and Depop, 3 social  networking  that will be the source of much talk for sure.
  • 1. New social networks: Polyvore

  • If something defines new social networks is that many of them are a mix between social network and marketplace. Polyvore is so: at first glance, it seems a marketplace specializing in fashion, beauty and decoration, but we soon realize that the purchase process is completed on the website of each seller,i.e. out of Polyvore. And while it is true that this social network has a clear commercial vocation and its exhibition of products very aims to promote sales, we cannot say that it i s a marketplace like Amazon or eBay
  • Polyvore offers 4 main actions to users:

    • Explore: it allows to browse the most popular products, the top rated looks and the best compositions of other users through Pinterest styled boards and beautiful collections.
    • Following: it allows to follow users and brands as in any social network, being updated of everything they publish and share on Polyvore.
    • Shop: it allows you to buy products in catalogue, accessing a typical ecommerce environment but completing sales always out of Polyvore.
    • Create: this allows you to create great style and inspirational collages and mood boards with Polyvore products through a very intuitive interface and then allows you to embed your compositions in external blogs
  • In short, Polyvore is a place that connects brands with users and especially with influencers (bloggers, instagrammers, etc.). So, if you have a shop specialized in beauty, fashion and decoration, you may be interesed in being present at Polyvore: it will give you access to a large number of trendsetters and an audience of quality ready to buy your product without thinking, and you can also earn huge fame as brand thanks to viral that this social network gives you. Definitely, a place to keep in mind in the future.
  • 2. New social networks: Snapchat

  • Snapchat is a curious social network / instant messaging service more similar to Whatsapp than to Facebook, but ,if you're a brand,  it will allow you to be accessible to a teen and pre-teen audience above all. And we say “be accessible” and not “access “ on purpose, as in Snapchat, you will not see the “snaps” of other users if they have not added you to their friends list.  This is how millennials work. Besides, photos and shared videos are deleted from the Snapchat server after a maximum of 10 seconds, it initially helps to improve users privacy and to avoid dangerous and abusive situations for the teenage audience, those who use this social network most -although as of today there have already been reported more than one security issue.
  • With Snapchat, you can make videos and photos and edit themby adding filters or drawings and then share them with a limited list of users. Your photos and videos will never be seen by snapchatters that you have not added to your friends list, and you can choose how fast what you've shared will be deleted,10 seconds max time during which your content will be visible.

What are the advantages of Snapchat? If you are blogger, instagrammer or a brand with a very visual product that attends to many events and/or intense activity on social networks, Snapchat will allow you to connect with your audience in a fun and way and in real time, encouraging that your activities are immediately followed by your fans. It also allows you to establish a very personal relationship with them thanks to its similarities with Whatsapp.
  • 3. New social networks: Depop

  • Depop is a marketplace type social network , surprising and very cool. It is, in short, a hipster  eBay - a super easy and intuitive way sell clothing and items online using only your phone, the light coming through your window, and all you find at home to create the styling of your photos. Without really meaning it, we will say that it looks like Wallapop a bit, with the difference that in Depop almost all sales are focused on fashion and accessories, and that the potential scope of your audience is global

In Depop you will find sellers of all kinds: from celebrities such as Dita Von Teese or fashion bloggers as Chiara Ferragni who sold their surplus items in Depop, individual sellers who put on sale clothing that do not fit them anymore, or small vintage clothing shops  that find Depop an easy way of selling online without investing an euro in infrastructure.
  • While Depop is an ecommerce site, we say that is a social network because of its structure and how the relationships between buyers and sellers are made. In Depop everyone can sell and buy, everyone can put their products on sale and ship them to the country they want to, and everyone can add everybody as a friend. To be part of the community, just create an user profile - very similar to that of Instagram - and start uploading products by following some tips provided by Depop. With these tips, photos will call attention and give good results. And something very important: once the photos of your products are published, you can share them automatically on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, where your friends outside Depop, will be able to click the buy button easily
