Necessary elements for an amazing unboxing

  • Long time ago we stopped being surprised by the range unboxings have. Users like them and, therefore, so do we. In today's post, you will find some of the elements needed to create a memorable, incredible unboxing experience and get certain return too. 
  • What is unboxing?

  • For those who are unfamiliar with this term, we will say that it is the fact of performing the opening of the package of a certain product through video or photographs.

    Obviously, it is not just a video in which the user opens the box and that is it. They usually last several minutes and the person who makes them usually stops in every detail: the outer packing, quality and design of the box, the protections that are found inside the box and, of course, all the items and add-ins that are included or the instructions. 

    That seems quite simple or, even, you may think it is something a bit strange, but currently it has turned to be a trend rather than a fashion as you can see in this graph from Google Trends. 
  • Which platforms are used?

  • As you can imagine, when we talk about video the platform par excellence is YouTube. There are millions of videos of unboxings there, sometimes isolated and others within specific channels that host only this type of content. 

    A good example to understand what level these channels are working at may be that of the Canadian Youtuber Unbox Therapy. Its channel has near 11 million subscribers that have generated a total, among all their videos, 2.043.218.867 views (Yes, you read the figure well ).
  • In fact, this type of content has finally become a genre by itself which goes beyond simple videos. Some blogs that go together with videos of extensive reviews have also become very popular, in many cases it is another category within them. 
  • Do all products have the power of persuasion?

  • In fact, anything that has a good packaging is likely to be target for unboxing, at least on paper. 

    Reality proves that those products related to technology, beauty and fashion work best. The first because of their aspirational component, they are very attractive and desired by users who satisfy that curiosity watching videos (they are also used to make purchase decisions). 

    Fashion and beauty work very well thanks to the ability of prescription of certain social profiles. Anything done by some influencers that you want are interested to work with within your niche, becomes a magnet for their audience (and yours). 

    Another business model that fits very well within unboxings (and never better said) are subscription boxes. We always have doubts before subscribing to a product's recurrent shipping of which we cannot control all the content you will receive.   • Which are the advantages for my eCommerce?

  • Actually, it is a very good strategy which is worth encouraging. There are several very clear benefits that you can get: 

    • Visibility: you do not need a guru. Any video can provide you a certain brand and product exposure. 
    • Referral and direct traffic: on the same line it has to be said that we can capitalize this in visits to our eCommerce.Keep in mind that they often include links (and much more if you have an affiliate program because they are interested in getting conversion)
    • Social proof: Unboxings are user-generated content and as such have a strong effect as peer recommendations. They help enormously to improve your brand´s credibility. 
    • Engagement: If only through third parties we will be getting to reinforce our presence in social networks. 
  • How can I encourage the creation of unboxings?

  • This is a good question. Given what we have seen and despite certain potential issues (they are reviews and unboxings can be also negative) is worth encouraging our users to upload their unpacking to the internet. 

    Any element that you can add to make shopping experience more attractive will work in your favor, do not miss any opportunity to cause a good effect. 
  • #1 - Outer packaging

  • We have spoken about packaging at length on this blog, but you cannot forget that although your box is a marvel of design, in many cases it will come inside an outer box. This is the first contact with the user and the first thing that you see in the unboxings

    Make sure it conveys what you wish your brand transmit Design? Strength?  Craftsmanship? Give it a thought and compare suppliers to make sure that you do not cut the experience short before starting. 
  • #2 - Inner packaging

  • Protections, quality of paper or textures appear in the videos very clearly. In fact, this kind of elements are often analysed carefully enough since an unboxing video lasts quite a while taking into account that it is a simple action, so everything tends to "stretch". 
  • #3 – Surprise effect

  • We love being surprised and this does not have to be expensive. Sometimes just a simple note thanking the user for his purchase. Give it a human touch, and if possible, try to fully customize the experience with this type of details (even there are people who send a handwritten note)
  • #4 – Gifts and bonus

  • This requires some investment, but it does not have to be any madness. A small object of merchandising that is useful and complementary to the purchased product can open the user´s heart. For example: If you sell guitar strings you can always give a pick with your logo, an object of low price and aligned with your user. 

    You can also include a coupon discount which favor recurring purchase and builds user´s loyalty the user. You can even offer an additional discount to the user who upload his unboxing. 
  • #5 – DIY

  • Sure, I have said so. There are many companies that make their own unboxings. It is a way of showing that you are interested in this type of content and encourage other users.Here you have Johnny Cupcakes CEO showing his products to the world. 
  • It is a simple strategy which also has the advantage of allowing you to control the tone and message. If these guys who know a lot of branding, why not you? 

    Keep in mind that you can also play with the recreational component as Aliexpress did in the past, beating the Guinness record of simultaneous unboxing in an event organized in Madrid.
